John served from 1980 to 1987 in the federal government as an economics analyst. Following his graduation from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1987, he practiced estates & trusts law, as well as corporate law, in private practice. In 1990 he returned to federal service to practice civil and criminal litigation. He spent the bulk of his 30-year federal career as Legislative Counsel negotiating legislation within the Executive Branch and with Congress. Upon his retirement in 2013, John founded a dispute resolution practice (Patuxent Mediation Services, LLC, , 410 772-8821). Since then, he has served, and continues to serve, on the mediation panels of several Maryland circuit courts. John handles civil, non-domestic circuit court cases, and has been designated as a specialist on the business and technology track. He also has extensive arbitration experience with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, as well as the Better Business Bureau. John has taught dispute resolution and negotiation at the University of Maryland King Carey School of Law since 2017. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Maryland Program for Mediator Excellence. John is admitted to the Maryland bar and no longer practices law due to his retirement as an attorney. He is a retired member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. John received his B.A in history, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Colgate University in 1977, and his M.A.in history in 1987 from Cornell University.
